Syttende Mai:
Celebrating Norwegian heritage across the region

Syttende Mai –the 17th of May –is a spring festival that marks Norway’s declaration of independence and celebrates the 1814 signing of Norway’s constitution and independence from Sweden. The city of Spring Grove, Minn., and the Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum in Decorah have each had a long tradition of celebrating Norwegian-American heritage in the region. That tradition continues with events beginning on Wednesday, May 11.

Spring Grove’s celebration

Spring Grove, Minn., has been recognizing founding fathers and honoring their Norwegian-American heritage since 1973 with an annual city-wide celebration. Since then, the celebration emphasizes the pride in their Norwegian ancestry through the ageless traditions of art, dance, food, clothing and congregation.

Music and food will be available in the park Wednesday, May 11, beginning at 4 p. m., prior to the 2022 Syttende Mai Queen and royalty coronation and honoree acknowledgment at 7 p. m.
